BAD MACHINE:
Computers can be nice. Or they can be naughty. Apparently our ISP had some issues with ours, so most of you did not get the last two months newsletters!
If you did, and this is old news, my apologies. I sprinkled some new stuff in, so hopefully there's something for everyone. I try hard to limit these to once a month, so I do apologize..
SORRY, AUSTRALIA!
As you may know, the name skylab2000 comes partially from the US space station called Skylab. Skylab was the United States' first space station back in the 1970's! In 1979 solar activity heated the outer layers of the Earth's atmosphere and increased drag on Skylab, leading to an early re-entry. Nobody was quite sure where it would crash, and there was worldwide panic! In the end it mostly broke apart, and the biggest pieces fell on Australia. The local Australian government fined the US $400 for littering. This bill was never paid, presumably as it was deemed trivial.
The big news today is that this last April - 30 years later, an American radio show paid the fine on behalf of NASA. Now we are finally paid up! And no late fees! Nice Aussies.
